Whither Social Software?

Philip Greenspun recently asked, "Did web-assisted social networking die?"  I suggested over a year ago that it wouldn't flourish until it had addressed value, privacy, and simplicity.  Now it appears LinkedIn has made a move in this direction, adding LinkedIn Groups.  I recently got an invitation to join one, and I'll be curious to see how this adds to the sharing request volume (both ways).  Dave Taylor also talked with LinkedIn about this new feature.  (The comment below his post is also worth reading.)
